A custom carving order is not complicated, but it fails in predictable ways. Nearly all of them come down to one of three things: an unclear brief, unrealistic expectations about natural stone, or skipping the sample.
Here is how to run it properly.
What you can customise
In a well-equipped carving workshop, the realistic customisation surface is:
- Size — within the range the workshop can actually handle for that material
- Shape and design — classic skull, alien form, winged, seasonal, or your own design
- Material — chosen from what is genuinely available at your size
- Carving source — from your photo, sketch or drawing, or from stone you supply
- Logo and pattern — applied to the piece
- Packaging — structure, material and printing
The single most important expectation to set
You can reproduce a design. You cannot reproduce a piece of stone.
Natural stone does not repeat. Colour, banding, veining and internal structure differ from block to block. If you approve a sample and then order 200 pieces, the production run will match the design closely but will not match the sample's colour or pattern exactly — because it is different stone.
This is not a quality failure. It is the nature of the material. But it needs to be agreed before the order, not explained after delivery.
If exact colour consistency is essential to your product line, say so at the brief stage. Some materials are far more consistent than others, and the right response is to choose material accordingly — not to demand something the material cannot deliver.
What to send in your brief
The more of this you provide, the more accurate the quote:

If you only have a rough reference image and a quantity, that is enough to start a useful conversation. Do not delay an enquiry because the brief is not perfect.
The sampling stage
A proper custom order includes a physical sample before mass production. Ours are paid, and they exist to protect both sides.
What the sample establishes:
- Whether the design reads the way you intended in three dimensions
- Whether the finish matches your expectation
- Whether the size and weight are right for your price point
- Whether your logo or pattern reproduces cleanly at the intended scale
Review the sample properly: hold it, compare it to your reference, check the features and the polish, and weigh it. Approving a sample you are not happy with is the most expensive mistake in a custom order, because everything downstream inherits it.
Production
Once the sample is approved, production runs to the agreed specification. Two things are worth agreeing in writing at this point:
- The tolerance. For natural stone and hand finishing, dimensions and weight vary. Agree an acceptable range rather than an exact figure nobody can hold.
- What happens if a piece fails inspection. Defective pieces should be replaced, not shipped on the assumption you will not notice.
Freight planning
Custom work often changes the shipping maths. A new size means new carton dimensions, which means a new volumetric weight. Ask for carton dimensions and packed weight for the actual new specification, not the closest stock item.
Common mistakes
- Approving a sample quickly because the deadline is close, then finding the problem at volume.
- Expecting colour matching across a production run in natural stone.
- Not specifying dimensions and assuming the workshop will infer them from a photo.
- Forgetting packaging until after the carving is agreed.
- Skipping the sample to save time, then paying for it at volume.
- Not agreeing tolerances, then disputing normal variation.
How we run custom projects
We work from customer reference images, sketches, drawings or customer-supplied raw stone, with custom dimensions from 5 cm to 150 cm. Logo, pattern and packaging customisation are all available, and we produce a paid sample for approval before mass production.
